Deputy Lands Minister Inaugurates Ahafo Regional Lands Commission

Deputy Lands Minister Inaugurates Ahafo Regional Lands Commission

The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Benito Owusu-Bio on Thursday 7th April, 2022, inaugurated the newly established regional office for Lands Commission in the Ahafo Regional capital, Goaso.

Following the creation of the new six (6) regions across the country, the ministry has decided to set up six new regional offices for the operations of the lands commission to help decentralize and produce efficient and effective land administration in the country.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon Owusu-Bio indicated the need for the creation of the Ahafo Regional Lands Commission office since the establishment is in furtherance to article 260(1) of the 1992 constitution.

Article 260(1) provides that "Lands Commission shall have a branch in each region to be known as Regional Lands Commission for the performance of functions specified in article 258 of this constitution."

The Deputy Minister said the lands commission shall manage public lands and any other lands vested in the President by the constitution or by any other law and any lands vested in the commission, and also advise the government on a policy framework for the development of the sector.

He explained further that the provision of efficient land administration services is at the core of every sector of the economy, adding that land administration services including survey and mapping, valuation of property, rating state land acquisition, among others are all critical services that help propel the socio-economic growth of the country.

Meanwhile the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources is on an agenda to decentralize the operations of the Lands Commission at the various district levels. This will ensure that the efficient land administration service delivery will be at the doorstep of every Ghanaian.

"The era when applicants have to travel for hours from Goaso, Mimi, Duayaw Nkwanta and others to access land administration services in Sunyani has become a thing of the past and thus, the unofficial cost associated with it will now reduce drastically," he said.

He indicated that, “what is unique about the establishment of offices in the new regions is that the offices will operate in a fully digital environment." This, he said, will help speed up the land transaction process and reduce bureaucracies associated with the processing of documents at the lands commission.

Meanwhile the Executive Secretary of the Lands Commission, Mr. James Dadson disclosed the Ahafo Lands Commission as the third of its kind since the commission has already inaugurated two other offices in the Western North region and the Oti Region.
