The History, Revolution and Competitive Advantage of Concrete Blocks

The History, Revolution and Competitive Advantage of Concrete Blocks

Structures for shelter is one the main needs for people. There have been diverse building structures from centuries to recent times.

People used to stay in caves molded by rocks for protection but recently the caves are a thing of the past.

Concrete blocks are the new building material trend for home builders these days. Concrete blocks are one of the main materials used during construction of any modern-day buildings. It is one of several formed and hardened products used in construction.

Research shows that the first hollow concrete block was designed in 1890 by Harmon S. Palmer in the United States. After 10 years of experimenting, Palmer patented the design in 1900.

Palmer’s blocks were 8 in (20.3 cm) by 10 in (25.4 cm) by 30 in (76.2 cm), and they were so heavy that they had to be lifted into place with a small crane. By 1905, an estimated 1,500 companies were manufacturing concrete blocks in the United States for construction activities.

The concrete blocks come in varieties, the popular concrete blocks had one or more hollow cavities as design, their sides may be cast smooth or also with a design.

This carefully designed blocks are stacked and arranged together with fresh mortar by an expert to a length of a wall and continues into a shelter. Concrete Blocks are further categorized into two forms, solid concrete blocks and hollow concrete blocks.

The concrete blocks are extensively used nowadays because the normal clay bricks are not environment friendly. Raw materials used for concrete blocks manufacturing are, powdered portland cement, water, sand, and gravels.

Concrete blocks are durable, very strong and can stand the test of time; be it moisture, pets or mold. Construction with concrete block is more systematic, faster and stronger.

It is also fire resistance, thus, a concrete block building can resist and limit fire’s ability to spread quickly to the whole structure as compared to a structure built with wood.

Concrete blocks are environmentally friendly as raw materials used to produce the blocks are sustainable and recyclable.

The carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with concrete block production is considered relatively low compared to those of similar building materials such as glass and steel.
