Confiscated Rosewood to be Used For National Cathedral- Jinapor

Seized rosewood at the Tema harbor will be of productive use for constructing the propose National Cathedral says the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, he indicated speaking to the media after inspecting the containers loads of seized rosewood, Mr. Jinapor said the rosewood will be sent first to the Forestry Commission depot in Achimota and later forwarded to the construction site of the National Cathedral as donation. 

“The government is making the decision to take all rosewood confiscated towards the construction of the National Cathedral, so in addition to the ban on the export, all rosewood confiscated should and will be donated to the National Cathedral,” he said. 

The honorable minister embark on this inspection with his deputy Mr. Benito Owusu Bio and Frederick Obeng Adom, Deputy Minister of Transport. Mr. Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, announced that this will begin with the five containers of rosewood impounded at the Tema Port last month.

“When the National Cathedral turns out to have enough rosewood, we will take other measures, to either donate to other public institutions and if we are minded to have a public auction for domestic use, rest assured it will be done with a sense of integrity,” Mr. Jinapor said.

Mr. Jinapor averred, there are directives by the government on ordering the ban on harvesting and exporting rosewood, saying; “No rosewood is to be exported.”

He stated any individuals or companies found harvesting rosewood, a criminal action, have been reported to the police for further action.

“Our duty is to put in the necessary steps to stop the illegal exportation of rosewood from the country,” Jinapor said. 

Mr. Jinapor said the government remains committed to ensuring sustainable and efficient management of Ghana’s lands and natural resources, and will do everything in its power to protect the resources.

The Mid-Year Budget Review on Thursday (29 July) by the Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, said the National Cathedral will be inaugurated on 6 March 2024 and seek the public to donate an amount GHC100 towards completing the project.

The BBC reports that Since 2012, over 540,000 tons of rosewood, the equivalent of 23,478 twenty-foot containers or approximately six million trees, were illegally harvested and imported into China from Ghana while bans on harvest and trade remains
