AFFORDABLE HOME DESIGN: WOOD PALLETS NOW THE ANSWER

AFFORDABLE HOME DESIGN: WOOD PALLETS NOW THE ANSWER

Pallet is a flat structure for transport mainly made of wood, which supports goods in stable manner when lifted by a forklift, pallet truck, front loader, hoist or vertical crane. Although most pallets are made of wood, pallets can also be made of plastic, metal, paper and recycled materials. They are usually a mixture of hardwoods and softwoods. The solid structure part is usually oak and the non-structural part is southern yellow pine.

Pallets were not used productively after its purpose in the cargo containers previously. Most import companies burn after goods are cleared, food vendors like kenkey sellers go for it to use as firewood. It is recently that a lot have realized it can be used to design home furniture to suit one’s taste.

Robert Mills, a pallet seller at Spintex, shared an insight with Real Estate Times Africa (RET) about how the sale of pallet moves swiftly. Most importing companies bring him the goods weekly. Sales move fast because he sells it to carpenters, event organisers, interior decorators and others for their personal use.

The traditional way most people in Ghana used the pallet for, was for fridge stands but now, most people purchase it to design chairs, beds, television console, dining tables, wardrobe and any other furniture of choice. The price of one pallet is sold at GHS25 and its very affordable than woods like Odum, Wawa etc. Most people prefer to design their homes in a way that will be easy on their pocket but also attractive. Not disputing the fact that royal furniture and sofa set are durable, it’s very expensive, and most people cannot afford hence the new invention with pallet is a choice for the young ones.

Paul Ansaeku who is a carpenter also spoke to us. He said, most home owners call him to design a lot with the pallet to cut cost, the cost of using the original woods such as Odum or purchasing kitchen cabinet, bedroom design and sitting room sofa set are very expensive and above the average Ghanaian’s pocket.   But with less, the pallet can be used for everything to suit your taste.  Eatery centers are now transitioning from the use of kiosk or containers to constructing their environment with a new architectural style of their preference with wood pallet.

An expert in home interior decoration, Mr. Reginald Amartey said, not every Ghanaian can afford the royal furniture or sofa set, designing a kitchen cabinet can cost closely GHS50000.  He only works with the affluent in society because they afford without complains, but he can also work with the middle class concerning their budget but still it will cost. The wood pallet in the interior decoration business is something new in Ghana, people are now accepting the concept. Even though he hasn’t worked with any client requesting such materials, he sees it to be less expensive and can cater for the less income earners in the country.

If most homes furnish their rooms with wood pallet, the cost of the homes will drop and make it affordable, furnishing a room is very expensive and all sum up to the total cost of a house.  Therefore, if the furnishing is less expensive, it will definitely affect the price of sales, making it affordable.
