"If You Think Safety Is Expensive, Try an Accident," A Safety Officer Dares

A member of the Ghana Institute of Safety and Environmental Professionals,

Sarfo Konadu Elijah has called on construction firms in the country to take the safety of their workers seriously and enhance safety measures at their sites to protect human lives and the environment.

In an interview with RET Africa, the safety officer described construction sites as one of the most hazardous work places, possibly the second most dangerous land-based profession after the fishing industry.

He said thousands of people suffer physical injuries and many others lose their lives at construction sites every year due to the lack of proper safety measures in the use of materials, equipment, and other items at work.

There is a need to put health and safety into everything done on site in order not to risk the work force, for it is dangerous to compromise on health and safety precautions at every construction site.

Mr. Sarfo further encouraged industry players to provide adequate health and safety equipment for the protection of everyone on site. "It is the duty of the employer to provide workers with personal protection equipment, if you think safety is expensive, try an accident. He said

In Ghana, most of the workers are from the informal sector. Hence, training workshops ought to be organized periodically to educate workers on health and safety precautions to help reduce health risks.

According to him, it is important to provide proper security at construction sites to help check unruly behavior of workers that has the potential to compromise on the safety measures at work. This according to him will enhance effectiveness and efficiency on sites.

Mr. Sarfo K. Elijah asserted that the services of site inspectors should be employed to assist in the monitoring, evaluating, and testing of the quality of materials and equipment used on these construction sites to ensure that appropriate safety measures are adhered to on the site.
