Auditing Of Government Landed Properties: An Estimated 25,000 To Be Captured

The Committee tasked by the Minister of Works and Housing, Hon. Asenso-Boakye, with the responsibility of undertaking a comprehensive audit of government landed properties has presented its inception report, recommended the setting up of a government property database.

The committee, chaired by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Abetifi, Hon. Bryan Acheampong, has its focus on government landed properties in the form of offices and residential accommodation.

Presenting the report, Hon Bryan Acheampong revealed that an estimated 25,000 government landed properties across the country will be captured, adding that a government property database, when operationalized, will capture; property type, the condition, the estimated value, as well as the GPS coordinates. This system, according to him, will enable the Ministry of Works and Housing to properly plan and manage all landed assets efficiently.

The committee has thus far audited and captured some 1,300 landed properties of Ministries, Departments, Metropolitan and District Assemblies (MMDAs) onto a database, requesting an additional six-month month to enable them to capture the remainder of the 25,000 government properties across the country onto the system.

Receiving the report, Hon. Asenso-Boakye expressed his gratitude to the Committee for the extensive work undertaken since its inauguration late last year, noting that the database will eventually be a useful source of information for the Public Works Department (PWD), an agency of the Ministry, whose operations will soon be diversified to enable it to effectively manage and maintain all public landed properties in the country.

The Minister for Works and Housing, therefore, gave the assurance that the report would be studied to consider the recommendations and the way forward in ensuring that the project is completed.
