Encroachers On Kpone Cemetery Land Can Only Be Evicted By The Assembly-TDC

Tema Development Company has highlighted that all Kpone community lands, including school lands, market lands, and cemetery lands, are no longer under the management of TDC but under the MMDCs, per the provision of the local governance act, 2016 (ACT 936).

The Protocol Administrative Officer for Tema Development Company, Ian Okoe, has indicated that Kpone cemetery lands are under the care of the Kpone Municipal Assembly and must be treated as such.

This is because such lands are meant for community purposes.

Following several requests from the Kpone traditional council and other individuals asking TDC to rezone portions of the cemetery lands for development has yielded no promising results. The traditional council and the municipal assembly have indicated that all efforts to warrant such requests were declined.

In December 2019, TDC, upon agreement with the Kpone Municipal Assembly approved the request by the Kpone traditional council to auction portions of the cemetery lands to raise adequate revenue for the construction of a fence wall around the remaining cemetery land, the new cemetery extension, and other existing cemetery.

This they believed was the only way the cemetery land was going to be free from encroachers and other trespassers within the Kpone Municipal Assembly.

“So, any development that you see around that particular area which is not part of this layout is an encroachment and I believe that since the land is not under our management we can only come as a real estate management company to resume, '' Mr. Okoe said.

He said that it is incumbent on the municipal assembly to up their game and make sure that illegal developments don’t exist within the cemetery lands.
