More Than Half of Kiosk Structures in Ghana are in Greater Accra – PHC Data

The greater Accra region holds the highest number of kiosk structures in the country, with 51 percent of the total number. This is according to provisional data on the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC) released by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

The region also leads in the number of conventional structures in the country, with a total of about 1,282,733. structures. In total, based on the type of structure, about 7.7 million were conventional structures, constituting 78.7 percent of the 9.8 million structures, with wooden structures, metal containers, and kiosks constituting 9.7 percent, 8.0 percent, and 2.8 percent respectively.

Addressing the press yesterday, September 22, the Chief Census Officer, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, noted “20 percent of structures in Ghana are either metal container, wooden structure or kiosk which indicated that the conventional structures contributed almost 4 out of every 5 structures.

“While in absolute terms Greater Accra had the highest number of conventional structures, thus 1.3million, it represented the least percentage, that is, 67.4 percent because of the predominance of metal containers in Greater Accra.

“From the data, we realised that 15 percent of the structures that we have in Ghana are metal container. We have significant percent of the 2.1m structures being metal container.

“More than half of the kiosks in the country are in Greater Accra specifically 51 percent of the total number of kiosks that we have in the country are located in Greater Accra.”

The North East Region had the highest percent of conventional structures that is 95 percent of the total structures in the Region were conventional structures

In terms of structure type, out of the 9.8million structures, a total of 5.6million were used for only residential purposes while 4.0million were used for non-residential purposes.

The Savanna Region recorded the highest proportion of residential purpose structures, specifically 71.9 percent while Western North Region recorded the highest percentage of non-residential purpose structures of 46.9 percent higher than the national figure of 40 percent.

The Census data also shows that residential structures are mainly concentrated in the Southern part of the country typically the regions along the coast and moving towards the Western North Region and part of Volta and, Eastern and Ashanti Regions.
