Preparedness of Private Hostels Towards Schools’ Reopening Next Year

Preparedness of Private Hostels Towards Schools’ Reopening Next Year

Many Governments across the globe were forced to close down religious places, educational institutions, sports venues etc. due to the contagious nature of the Coronavirus. There is gradual easing of restrictions and schooling is returning to normalcy worldwide. H.E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announcing measures taken by the Government in his 18th address to the nation to combat the pandemic, said that the next academic year will commence from January 2021.

In view of this, many universities in Ghana are making plans for safe accommodation of students. For instance, speaking to Radio Universe, Dr. Charles Wiafe-Akenten, Head of Halls at the University of Ghana (UG), indicated that there will be sufficient bed space in Halls for students in the next academic year.

However, private hostels around UG are in limbo regarding the proposed modular academic system the management of the University intends to adopt. In an interview with Real Estate Times Africa (RETAfrica), a management staff of Pentagon Hostel at UG had this to say:

“It hasn’t been easy thinking about exactly when school is resuming, we don’t know whether all the students are coming together or they will be in this modular system that Legon [UG] proposed some time ago.”

Mr. David Mensah, a management staff of Evandy Hostel near KNUST also indicated to RETAfrica that, the Dean of Student of KNUST met hostel managers in October to discuss measures to put in place as the academic year is expected to begin from January 2021. It was agreed at the meeting that there should be provision of hand sanitizers at the entrance of hostels and enforcement of the obligatory wearing of masks by all hostel facility users.

Concerning occupancy levels, Mr. Mensah indicated more than 90% of his facility has already been booked by students and fully paid for use during the next academic year.
