Agenda 111: Each District Hospital To Cost US$17M - Information Minister

As part of government’s initiatives to help manage the outburst of the Covid-19 pandemic, the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on his 8th Covid-19 address in April last year promised to construct 111 hospitals to aid in the management of the pandemic.

Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, speaking at the Ministry’s press briefing on Sunday said “the government of Ghana’s agenda 111 which aims at providing one hundred and one hospitals will commence Tuesday, 17th August,2021,” adding that US$17million has been budgeted for each project. The Minster noted that the project will see to the provision of two specialised hospitals, one in the Middle belt and the other in the Northern belt, both of which are psychiatric hospitals.  There will also be the construction of six new additional regional hospitals and an extra one regional hospital in the Western Region. The district hospitals are designed to be completed within 12 months from the point of commencement.

According to Hon. Oppong Nkrumah, the government has secured 88 different parcels of lands for the commencement of the project out of 111. He added that, commencement funding of US$100m has been made available for the project through the Ghana Infrastructure Development Fund. The project is funded by the government of Ghana with the regional and specialised hospitals being an EPC arrangement. He assured constructors for the projects have been secured and are commencing work this week.

“The project is expected to deepen healthcare delivery at all district levels and ensure that the Ghanaian can access high quality healthcare at all levels. It will also provide thousands of works for the healthcare staff recruited and posted to all these 111 facilities as well as their ancillary workers in the communities. The housing and local services associated to project will add a new layer to the local economic activities to serve the local communities.”

The Minister called on all, especially the local beneficiary communities, traditional leaders, youths and all actors in the local healthcare sector, to give their full support to this project for the benefit of everyone across the country.
