138.5 Million New KATH Maternity Block Progressing

Work is   progressing on the five hundred-bed capacity maternity block for the Okomfo Anokye teaching hospital in Kumasi. 

The facility designed to replace the uncompleted seven hundred and fifty capacity one which has been abandoned for the past forty-six years is costing the state some €138.5 million.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. Simon Osei Mensah, who visited the site last week with the Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi expressed satisfaction at the pace of work. 

Mr. Simon Osei Mensah said the decision to demolish the building was informed by a comprehensive risk assessment undertaken by relevant engineering companies, including Architectural and Engineering Services Limited, saying the government has taken the best decision for the people.

Officials of Contracta, the Brazilian firm tasked with the construction who took the minister and his entourage around the project are expected to be complete the new six-story structure is in three years. 

The state-of-the-art, modern health edifice according to officials, comes with pediatrics, gynecology, and obstetrics units, it will also house an intensive care unit, a high dependency unit, isolation rooms, and student lecture halls, with the capacity to provide catering services for staff, patients and students.
