Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital: Surgery Department in a Sick Shape.

Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital: Surgery Department in a Sick Shape.

Korle-Bu is one of the biggest hospitals in Ghana and currently the third referral center in Africa, built by Sir Gordon Guggisberg in 1923.

One of the busiest wings in the hospital is its Surgery Department which is currently a death trap to injured patients.

The state of the block that houses the Department of Surgery is not befitting of the country, Ghana as the hub of health tourism within the West Africa Sub-region as envisaged.

The department was one of the early departments established in Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to provide training and conduct research. The department occupies the main six-story Surgery Block.

The National Cardiothoracic Centre, National Reconstructive Plastics Surgery and Burns Centre, Trauma & Orthopedics Centre, and New Allied Surgery Sub-BMC are all subsumed under Surgery.

The department also draws a sizeable number of its clientele from neighboring countries such as Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Togo.

The Surgery Department serves as an emergency for injured patients to undergo surgery.

The block is in a deplorable state and dire need of attention for a better health condition for both health practitioners and patients.

Even though the government has accepted and implemented the recommendations of the task force which resulted in the construction of new structures, such as the Maternity, Medical, Surgical, and Child Health Blocks, the surgical block is still in a deplorable state which hasn’t received any attention.

Real Estate Times Africa’s visit to the place revealed the sorry state of the structure currently begging for attention.

The expression on the faces of workers at the facility who were reluctant to speak to our news team was enough to tell the challenges facing them at the facility.
