Pokuase Interchange; One of The Biggest Designs in Africa

The $94 million, a four-tie interchange at Pokuase in the Ga West Municipality in the Greater Accra Region has been commissioned and expected to ease vehicular traffic on the Accra to Nsawam highway, touted as one of the largest interchanges in West Africa, first of its kind in the region and second only to South Africa on the African continent.

The originally three-tier design was later modified to its current state and construction started in 2018 at 94.8 million dollars with funding by the African Development Bank and the Government of Ghana. 

The construction of the interchange was undertaken by Messrs China Zhongmei Engineering Company Limited a Chinese company and structural engineering with an Associated Consultants Limited.

The project was being executed under the Accra Urban Transport Project and is supervised by the Department of Urban Roads under the auspices of the Ministry of Roads and Highway.

The project is mainly aimed at removing the traffic at the Pokuase ACP junction by preventing streams of traffic conflicting with one another from the Awoshie-Pokuase and Accra-Kumasi roads.         The interchange connects Nsawam to Accra, Awoshie to Pokuase, Kwabena to Pokuase.

Made up of different tiers, the first tier links Accra to Nsawam, the existing Accra-Nsawam-Kumasi Highway, connecting to the capital city Accra and on the other end to the Ashanti region on the N6. The third tier connects Awoshie to Pokuase ACP. 

The middle tier link to Awoshie, Pokuase ACP, Accra, and Nsawam    The project’s goal to improved mobility on the Accra-Nsawam section of the Accra-Kumasi Highway, a reduction the incidence of road accidents, improved business opportunities for local businesses, and also reduce traveling time on the Accra-Nsawam road and Awoshie-Pokuase stretch. 

The interchange will enhance urban mobility and improving livelihoods in the project area of influence. 

The Pokuase Interchange will help reduce traffic on and facilitates traffic between two key roads, the Tema-Ouagadougou-Bamako corridor and the Awoshie-Pokuase road. 

Furthermore, the Pokuase Interchange will help reduce traffic between two key roads, the Tema-Ouagadougou-Bamako corridor and the Awoshie-Pokuase to promote sustainable economic growth and an increase in economic activities to improve accessibility to and within the area by enhancing access to socio-economic infrastructure.

Apart from the interchange, there are also several ancillary works incorporated into the project to provide improvement and upgrade of adjoining communities such as Pokuase, Ayawaso, and the John Teye areas. 

They include the construction of drains, a little over 10-km of town roads, two footbridges that come with a ramp for the physically challenged, and a tunnel to serve water to communities that are not connected to the Ghana Water Company Ltd network.

The interchange will improve mobility on the Accra-Nsawam section of the Accra-Kumasi Highway, increase employment opportunities for residents, improved business opportunities for local businesses. 

The interchange will achieve its objective of enhancing urban mobility and improving livelihoods in the project area of influence.
